Let’s be honest: With all the craziness moms have had to endure this month, from working from home to becoming home-school teachers overnight, they deserve some extra pampering this Mother’s Day. The local subscription box Mom Things is giving moms and women an outlet to focus on themselves during these unprecedented times.
The Ashburn-based bimonthly subscription service provides customers with all kinds of products perfect for the everyday mom and woman, hand-selected by co-owners Brooke King and Julie Powers.
The concept started back in September 2018. With King working as a human resources director and Powers owning a small meeting planning firm (both women still work their full-time jobs), the two started to brainstorm ideas for a new business that would help moms make their daily life easier.
“We took a few days to write down any item or service someone in our family would benefit from and then decided with so many awesome products that we love and use every day, we can send those to moms,” said the co-owners. By January 2019 the first subscription boxes were being sent out to customers.
Now, almost one and a half years into business, Mom Things offers a variety of options for customers, including the bimonthly subscription boxes, the customizable Build Your Own box and a special Mother’s Day box for the upcoming holiday. When ordering a box, customers can expect to receive at least five products, which can include a variety of kitchen items, beauty products and stationary from both national brands and local businesses.
King and Powers said they have already seen an increase in the build your own box option as people are sending gifts of comfort to their loved ones while social distancing.
“We have seen so many amazing personalized gift notes to support nurses, doctors, parole officers, grocery store clerks, police officers and Moms at home just trying to keep all the balls in the air,” said King and Powers.
Since the stay-at-home orders have taken place, and mothers across the country have taken on a greater responsibility juggling home and work life, the two friends have made it a priority to remind moms in their community how strong and loved they are through the business’ social media posts, even adding two extra gifts to the upcoming May box to show their appreciation.
King and Powers explained that they wanted to give back to their Mom Things community and make moms feel special heading into Mother’s Day during this uncertain time. “Our content is driven to remind moms how awesome they are, make them laugh and empower women. Right now, having a place to show it’s OK to feel however they are feeling and, most importantly, to know they are not alone is so important.”
