It’s not just about earning community service hours. Volunteer work teaches children compassion for others and is a rewarding way to spend quality time together. Some families choose to lend a hand based on current interests while others seek ventures outside their comfort zone. Children can learn vital skills, meet new people and gain better self-confidence. Plus, people that participate in volunteering as children are more likely to give back to their communities as adults.

Northern Virginia has countless volunteer opportunities for families. Here are some great places to get started:

Local Volunteer Resources:

ACTS (Action in Community Through Service)

Back in 1969, 13 area churches banded together to alleviate suffering and hunger. Today, ACTS fulfills community needs by operating a food bank, thrift store and providing vital emergency services. After filling out an online application, families are matched with age-appropriate volunteer positions.

Loudoun Cares

From helping out at events to ongoing commitments, Loudoun Cares’ online volunteer center makes it easy to search for a wide variety of activities. High school students are able to apply for the unique Claude Moore Community Builders program, a 10-month project engaging teens in meaningful service opportunities.

Volunteer Alexandria

Volunteer Alexandria fosters connections between nonprofits, city agencies and volunteers. Families can sign up for a free account to find fitting service opportunities and link up with partner organizations through its website database.

Volunteer Arlington

Volunteer Arlington partners with organizations seeking volunteers of all ages. A special section on their website is dedicated entirely to youth and family volunteering. Current opportunities are organized with project descriptions, age requirements and links to apply.

Volunteer Fairfax

Volunteer Fairfax is a complete resource to find volunteer opportunities in the greater Fairfax County area. The VolunteerNow! tool makes it easy to search for age-specific service activities. Volunteer Fairfax also publishes an annual Directory of Youth Services, a comprehensive guide to youth volunteering in Fairfax County.

Volunteer Prince William

For nearly 40 years, Volunteer Prince William has been joining volunteers with a diverse group of nonprofits in its community. View the online calendar of events to find out about local service projects. Families can also register online and connect with organizations in need of regular assistance.
