The focus will be on dad this upcoming Father’s Day weekend, and a few local Fairfax County golf courses are honoring the occasion by hosting tournaments for fathers to play alongside their kid, spouse or even their own father. Burke Lake Golf Center will host its tournament on Saturday, June 17, while Oak Marr Golf Complex will sponsor its own the following Sunday, June 18.
Burke Lake, which has held the Father’s Day Tournament for more than 20 years, will have the divisions split into three age groups. Depending on who dad decides to play with, he will be able to compete in the Father/Junior (ages 7-12), Father/Junior (13-17) or Father/Adult partner divisions.
With the average score of the Father/Adult partner scrambles just a few ticks over par, there isn’t as much emphasis put on competitiveness—although the top three teams in each division do take home prizes. Registration for the Burke Lake tournament is open now with preference given to the first 48 pairs that sign up to participate. The 18-hole event begins at 8 a.m. and requires a registration fee of $65 per team.
Can’t make the Saturday tournament? Oak Marr will host its annual tournament the day of Father’s Day and has more evenly split youth divisions. Age groups are separated into Father/Junior (ages 8-10), Father/Junior (11-13) and Father/Junior (14-17). The cost is also a bit lower at $40, and trophies are handed out for each division. Tee time is set for 9 a.m., and registration starts June 5.
Both golf courses, which are operated and owned by Fairfax County, are open for the season for anyone looking to get familiar with the greens before getting in on one of the tournaments. Neither course is particularly difficult, leaving plenty of room for both beginners and veterans to give it a go. A few holes are just over 200 yards away, but they’re both standard par-3 courses.
