Second Near-Miss at Reagan National to Be Investigated

Sen. Tim Kaine said the incident shows that the Arlington airport is at capacity.

By Colleen Kelleher May 30, 2024 at 10:23 am

The Federal Aviation Administration plans to investigate another near-miss incident at Reagan National Airport.

An American Airlines flight headed for Boston aborted its takeoff on Wednesday morning to avoid another smaller plane that had landed at the Arlington airport.

“An air traffic controller canceled the takeoff clearance for American Airlines Flight 2134 because another aircraft was cleared to land on an intersecting runway,” the FAA said in a statement.

“The safety of our customers and team members is our top priority, and we’re grateful to our crew for their professionalism. We will support the FAA in its investigation,” American Airlines said in a statement, according to CNN.

Nobody was hurt.

“I’m relieved no one was hurt,” said Sen. Tim Kaine in a social media post on the X platform. “But this incident underscores again that DCA is at capacity. This shows why Senate action to jam even more flights into DCA was so dangerous. The FAA must resist any new flights that compromise safety.”

This is the second close call at the airport in six weeks. The April near-miss incident involved a JetBlue flight to Boston and a Southwest flight to Orlando remains under investigation by the FAA.
