Two former Washington Spirit players are swapping the soccer field for a race around the world. Ali Krieger and Joanna Lohman are among the 13 teams competing on the 39th season of CBS’ The Amazing Race. The new season premieres September 30 and will send the former teammates across five continents, nine countries and 13 cities.
The Amazing Race follows teams of two as they travel around the world and compete in a series of challenges. Hosted by Phil Keoghan, teams must navigate unfamiliar places, complete physical and mental tasks, and race to the next destination. The first team to cross the finish line wins a $1 million prize.
Krieger was born in Dumfries and is a two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and Olympian. She played alongside Lohman during their time with the Washington Spirit. Lohman, who is from Silver Spring, Maryland, also played for several professional teams throughout her career.
The pair will have to rely on more than their soccer backgrounds as they navigate challenges in the reality show. The season begins in Vancouver, Canada, and includes challenges such as a 200-foot jump from the catwalk of BC Stadium, walking with camels in Morocco, and flying a paramotor in Laos.
This season also comes with a new twist. Each of the 13 teams will receive an Express Pass at the start of the race, which must be used by the end of the sixth leg.
The Amazing Race Season 39 premieres on September 30, at 9:30 p.m. on CBS. The second episode will air on October 1, at 9:30 p.m., before the show moves to its regular Wednesday time slot on October 7.
