In her final season with the UConn Huskies, Arlington native Azzi Fudd is looking to lead her team to another winning season before heading to the WNBA. The 23-year-old shares what it will take to win a second national championship, why she got into podcasting, and her favorite spots around town.
Which accomplishment makes you most proud?
I mean, the national championship was so special. Our team went through so much in the years leading up to it, and we worked so hard all season. Basketball is a team sport, so even though I’m so grateful for all the individual accolades, it’s really special when you get to celebrate with your teammates.
What will it take for UConn to win back-to-back national championships?
We’ve been really focused all season on staying present and not looking ahead. We just need to take everything one game at a time and focus on what’s directly in front of us. I think we have great chemistry as a team, and if we continue to focus on ourselves and not any outside noise, we’ll put ourselves in the best position for the postseason.
What led you to start the Azzi Fudd Hooping for a Cure Basketball Camp when you were at St. John’s College High School in DC?
It’s always been important to me to give back to my community. Putting on a clinic with kids, teaching them basketball, having fun, and raising money for important causes — it’s just for me a great way to give back. We’ve been able to raise money for the Pat Summitt Foundation and Abigail Zittoun [Family] Foundation.
What made you want to start a podcast?
I started my podcast, Fudd Around and Find Out, as a way to connect with fans in a more authentic way. And I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone. It’s something different that I haven’t done before.
Have you had a favorite guest so far?
I love having my current teammates on. It’s just fun talking to them and getting to showcase their personalities and tell stories with them.
Who would be your dream guest?
I’m a big Scandal fan, so I’d love to have Kerry Washington on the podcast.
What are some of your favorite restaurants and spots to visit when you’re back in Arlington?
I love to eat at Uncle Julio’s. I go to the Thomas Jefferson Community Center to do workouts when I’m home. When I want to go shopping, I’ll go to Tysons.
