Fairfax County residents looking to add greenery to their yards can now receive free trees delivered straight to their homes through a new county program.
The initiative, in partnership with Fairfax County’s Urban and Community Forestry Division and the Arbor Day Foundation, allows residents to sign up online to receive up to two free trees per household. The trees are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Residents who register through the program can choose their trees through an online portal. The trees will be shipped directly to each home, along with stakes and protective tree shelters. The trees are regionally native and non-invasive, chosen specifically for the Fairfax climate and optimal growing conditions.
This effort is part of Fairfax County’s broader work to expand and strengthen its urban tree canopy. Increasing tree coverage can help improve air quality, provide shade, reduce stormwater runoff, and support local wildlife habitats. Programs like this also encourage residents to take an active role in improving their neighborhoods’ environmental health.
“This program makes it easy for Fairfax County residents to take meaningful climate action right in their own yards,” says Brian Keightley, director of the Urban and Community Forestry Division. “By planting trees today, we’re investing in cooler neighborhoods, cleaner air, and long-term energy savings for our community.”
County officials encourage residents to apply early due to the limited number of trees available.
