Capital One Arena to Host DC’s First-Ever Professional Women’s Hockey Game

The Montréal Victoire and New York Sirens are set to play on the ice that Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals call home.

DC-area hockey fans are in for an exciting new experience. On January 18, the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is set to play a match at DC’s Capital One Arena for the first time ever.

The matinee Sunday matchup will feature the Montréal Victoire taking on the New York Sirens. Watch as league leaders Kristýna Kaltounkova and Marie-Philip Poulin face in a head-to-head matchup. The puck drop is at 2 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the PWHL Takeover Tour to Capital One Arena and to celebrate the incredible momentum behind women’s hockey,” said Ted Leonsis, founder, chairman, managing partner, and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, in a recent press release. “This event is an exciting chance for fans in our region to experience world-class women’s hockey talent, and a reflection of our ongoing commitment to supporting women’s sports at every level. The energy surrounding the PWHL is undeniable, and we’re proud to play a role in helping that movement reach new audiences.”

Tickets are still available for next week’s matchup; prices start at $30.34. Those who can’t find a seat can stream it on YouTube and thepwhl.com.

Looking for a closer seat to the action? The Capitals just announced a sweepstakes where fans can enter to win four lower bowl tickets to the PWHL game and four passes to an exclusive post-game autograph session with select players.

Fans can also get in on the action a day before the game. On Saturday, January 17, both teams will host open practices at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. The Victoire’s practice will run from 10:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m., while the Sirens will practice from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Later that night, Poulin and Kayla Vespa (a Sirens player and lifelong Caps fan) will participate in a ceremonial puck drop before the Capitals take on the Florida Panthers at Capital One Arena at 7 p.m.

DC is one of 11 neutral sites throughout the United States and Canada to host the growing tour. This is the PWHL’s third Takeover Tour. Last season’s event brought in a record-breaking crowd of over 123,000 fans throughout the nine-game series.

The PWHL currently has teams located in Boston, Minnesota, Montréal, New York, Ottawa, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver.
