Check Out the 12 Best Events Happening This Weekend Across Northern Virginia and DC

Sip on Virginia wines, race go-karts, try regional bites, and more this weekend.

This weekend is jam-packed with events around the Northern Virginia area. Stop by Taste of NoVA to meet a local celebrity chef, or cheer on your favorite racehorse in Middleburg’s annual races. From food and wine to live music and artisan markets, here is what’s happening from October 8 to 13. 

Fremont Ave. 

October 8–November 23 

Grab tickets to the world premiere of this layered dramatic comedy written by Colman Domingo Award winner Reggie D. White and directed by two-time Helen Hayes Award winner Lili-Anne Brown. The play follows three generations of Black men facing buried resentment, unmet expectations, identity, and masculinity while sitting around a card table. Disney on Ice Presents Jump In!  

October 9–13 

Enjoy your favorite Disney songs with segments from movies like Zootopia, Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Toy Story, and more at Disney’s latest on-ice show. With over 50 characters, interactive elements, acrobatics, and world-class figure skating, this event is great for Disney fans of all ages. Race The District

October 9–12, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. 

Union Market’s parking lot becomes an outdoor racetrack for this unique, four-day go-kart experience. Race your friends around the track and grab a bite from pop-up food vendors like Suburbia Bar before seeing headlining electronic duo Louis the Child perform at the live block party on Fifth Street on Saturday. Fall Capital Art and Craft Festival

October 10–12, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. 

Explore art, jewelry, clothing, paintings, pottery, and more at this three-day festival with more than 300 juried artists. The event takes place three times a year and hosts vendors from all over the region selling handcrafted products. The festival is a great opportunity to browse unique gifts for friends and family for the upcoming holiday season. Dulles Expo Center: 4368 Chantilly Shopping Ctr., Chantilly, $11

Mount Vernon Fall Wine Festival

October 10–12, 6–9 p.m. 

Taste unlimited samples from 20 Virginia wineries at George Washington’s estate at this annual event. Enjoy views of the Potomac River, tour the mansion after hours, or snap a picture with a George Washington impersonator before grabbing a bottle of your favorite wine to take home. Concessions like corn dogs, buffalo chicken dip, charcuterie, and a variety of desserts will be sold throughout the event, and members of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association get a discount on ticket prices. Taste of NoVA

October 11–12. 12 p.m.–4 p.m.  

Sample food and drinks from the best that Northern Virginia has to offer at Northern Virginia Magazine’s annual two-day food and wine festival, now at NOVA LIVE. Stop by a live cooking demonstration or a panel discussion while tasting samples from chefs, winemakers, brewmasters, distillers, and more. This year, the three-star Michelin chef Patrick O’Connell from the Inn at Little Washington will make his Taste of NoVA debut to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. The “Breakout Comedian of the Year” Competition

October 11, 8 p.m.  

Hosted by SNL alum Jay Pharoah, watch six rising comedians battle it out for a $10,000 grand prize and a chance to sign with a Hollywood talent agency. The competition is a part of the Because They’re Funny Comedy Festival, a three-day comedy event meant to showcase a new generation of stand-up talent. Virginia Fall Races

October 11, 10:30 a.m.–6 p.m.  

In the heart of Middleburg hunt country, these fall races have taken place for over 70 years. In between cheering on your favorite horses, stop by the Family Fun Fair for a petting zoo and bounce houses, or browse through handcrafted artisan goods from the Vendor Village. Since 1995, a portion of the proceeds of the event have been donated to the Inova Loudoun Hospital Foundation. Glenwood Park: 36787 Glenwood Park Ln., Middleburg, starting at $50   

Freedom Fest 

October 11, 12–9 p.m.   

Honor local heroes at this family-friendly music festival. All proceeds from the festival benefit Ten Ten Life and Veterans Moving Forward, two non-profit organizations that provide mental health care and trained service dogs to military, veterans, first responders, and their families. Enjoy bands, artists, and ensembles from Virginia, Maryland, and beyond, with military, veterans, first responders, and their families getting 50 percent off ticket prices. City of Fairfax Fall Festival 

October 11, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.  

For the 49th year, the City of Fairfax is hosting over 400 vendors on the streets of Old Town Fairfax with live music, several beer gardens, and children’s activities. Pick out early holiday gifts for friends and family, grab a local Devils Backbone lager, and enjoy live music from performers like the Main Street Community Band. Rocktoberfest

October 11, 4:30–10 p.m.  

Enjoy live music from Keeton, Ace Monroe, and headliner Smash Mouth at this sip and stroll event in Reston Town Center. Grab a drink at a participating restaurant like Makers Union, North Italia, Sixty Vines, or Fogo de Chao before enjoying the rock band’s greatest hits like “All Star” and “Walkin’ On the Sun.” The Reston Town Center Pavilion: 1818 Discovery St., Reston, free 

Balian Springs’ Self Care Summit  

October 12, 3–9 p.m.  

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of fall markets, festivals, and Oktoberfests with a self-care summit at this Alexandria day spa and wellness workshop. The private retreat includes relaxing activities like puppy yoga and Pilates, a silent disco sound bath, and guided meditation.
