Leesburg Officials Investigating Explosion that Dislodged Manhole Covers

Fire and rescue units from the area responded to several reports of a loud noise.

Leesburg residents are still wondering what shook many of them from their slumber early Sunday morning. According to the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, the Loudoun County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call just after 4 a.m. The caller reported an explosion in the area of Sparkleberry Terrace and Ginko Terrace in northeast Leesburg.

Fire and rescue units from Leesburg, Hamilton, Ashburn, Lansdowne, command officers, and members of the Leesburg Police Department responded. “Units arrived on scene to find several dislodged manhole covers with light smoke in the area. Firefighters checked the incident area and found no further hazards or dangers to the community,” Loudoun Fire and Rescue said in a release.

The Leesburg Police Department posted on social media that officers had responded to a report of a loud noise in the Sycamore Hills neighborhood (Potomac Station Drive) that woke up several residents. When they arrived, officers found multiple manhole covers out of place.

“At this time, it is unclear whether the covers were displaced by an underground issue or were intentionally moved,” Leesburg Police said. “We will provide updates as additional information becomes available.”

The Loudoun County Fire Marshall’s office is investigating the incident. They are asking that anyone with information or video from the scene contact investigator Dillion Huss at 571-528-3964 or [email protected].
