Manassas, Leesburg Airports Receive More Than $1M Each for Upgrades

Plus, a 20-year master plan is in the works for expansions at Dulles.

Six Virginia airports will get a funding boost, including the Leesburg Executive Airport and the Manassas Regional Airport, Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced.

“Investing in our airports is a crucial component of strengthening Virginia’s economy and keeping travelers safe,” the state senators said. “We’re proud to support this funding and will keep working to foster growth and convenient transportation in the Commonwealth.”

The funds, intended to support infrastructure improvements, will be provided through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration Airport Infrastructure Grant program.

Of the more than $15.5 million provided in total, $1,035,500 will go to the Town of Leesburg to reconstruct 5,500 feet of existing pavement parallel to a taxiway at the Leesburg Executive Airport. The City of Manassas will get $1,019,868 to rehabilitate 6,200 feet of runway at the Manassas Regional Airport.

Dulles Airport Master Plan

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is in the process of approving a 20-year master plan for Dulles International Airport. If passed, it would significantly expand the facility to accommodate millions more passengers, The Washington Business Journal reports.

This plan has been in development since 2020 and includes several changes — some new, some ongoing. It includes adding a fifth runway, completing an underground passenger train, increasing the number of gates from 130 to 154, and creating an above-ground connection to link the main terminal to Concourse A/B.

It also includes the completion of Concourse E/F, the first phase of which is already under construction, and the buildout of a new Concourse G/H.

Other potential developments could include a new entertainment venue and hotel concept in the area near the main terminal, plus new cargo facilities, parking garages, and expanded aviation buildings.

The MWAA board will vote on the master plan on Wednesday, July 16, then submit it to the Federal Aviation Administration for final approval.
