Driver Alert: Crews Are Shifting Lanes on I-495 near Tysons

Expect multi-lane closures and stoppages during the construction process.

By Maggie Roth June 27, 2025 at 10:57 am

On Friday night, June 27, traffic crews will shift traffic for all four southbound lanes of I-495 near Tysons. This is the first of two phases to move traffic onto newly constructed lanes.

These lane shifts will allow crews to access the center portion of the beltway to construct new express lanes. It’s all part of VDOT’s ongoing I-495 Express Lanes Northern Expansion (495 NEXT) project. Crews conducted similar work on the northbound lanes in May.

This first phase of work will impact the southbound lanes from just north of the George Washington Memorial Parkway to just south of Georgetown Pike. Crews will move the general traffic lanes onto newly constructed lanes around 8 p.m. on Friday.

To complete the shift, one lane will close at 8 p.m., a second lane will close at 9 p.m., and a third will close at 10 p.m. One southbound lane will remain open, except “when intermittent total traffic stoppages and/or slow-roll traffic operations occur between midnight and 5 a.m.” Police will assist with directing traffic.

Lanes will begin reopening at 6 a.m. All four lanes will reopen in their new alignment by 10 a.m. on June 28.

The ramps from southbound I-495 to GWMP and Georgetown Pike, the ramp from GWMP to southbound I-495, and the ramp from Georgetown Pike to southbound I-495 will be closed and detoured from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday.

The second phase will impact the section south of Georgetown Pike to north of the Dulles Corridor Interchange near Old Dominion Drive. That shift could start as early as Friday, July 11.

July 4 Traffic

Statewide, VDOT announced that many lane closures and work zones will be temporarily lifted during the Fourth of July holiday. Those changes will be in place from Thursday, July 3, to Monday, July 7. Check the VDOT website for roadwork advisories.
