7 Budget-Friendly Events in Northern Virginia for $15 or Less

From campfires to festivals, these low-cost May events are fun for the whole family.

As spring moves into summer, you don’t have to break the bank to have fun. These budget-friendly family events in May will keep the whole family entertained.

Twilight Tattoo: U.S. Army Live Military Experience

Wednesdays May–July, 7–8 p.m.

See a live military experience with the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the U.S. Army Military District of Washington ceremonial units, and more. The experience is recommended for school-aged children. Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall on Summerall Field: 247 Sheridan Ave., Arlington, free

Campfire Wagon Ride at Frying Pan Farm Park

May 9, 5 p.m.

For those ages 2 and up, an after-hours experience at Frying Pan Farm includes a wagon ride and a bonfire complete with marshmallows for roasting. Staff will provide the marshmallows, but if you want s’mores, guests are encouraged to bring the chocolate and graham crackers on their own. 2709 W. Ox Rd., Herndon, $10 per person

Well Ray

May 17, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

The Del Ray Business Association is presenting its ninth annual health and wellness festival, Well Ray. There will be booths including blood pressure screenings, chiropractic assessments, and more. There will be free outdoor fitness classes in yoga, dance, boxing, and more. Bring a water bottle, yoga mat, and wear sneakers. The event will be collecting donations for their featured non-profit, Wilderness Kids Alexandria. Mt. Vernon Avenue, Del Ray, free

McLean Day 2025

May 17, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

McLean’s annual festival is turning 110 this year, and celebrations include music, a beer and wine garden, food trucks, games, a magician, petting zoo, and carnival rides. The event typically brings out over 10,000 people. While admission is free, ride tickets are available for purchase on site and online in advance here. 1659 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean, free admission

Old Town Festival of Speed & Style

May 18, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Attendees can check out a collection of over 100 rare and exotic cars and motorcycles from the 1950s through 1980s. There will also be live music and food. This year marks the sixth iteration of the festival, which is presented by Burke & Herbert Bank. 200–500 King St., Alexandria, free

Kids and Family Petting Zoo at Shipgarten

May 18, 12–6 p.m.

There will be free face painting, arts and crafts, a moon bounce, and more fun activities at this event in Tysons. There will also be a full outdoor playground, petting zoo, and dogs are also welcome for pup cups and Kongs filled with peanut butter. 7581 Colshire Dr., Tysons, free

Garden Sprouts Spring-Nature Playgroup

May 19, 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.

For preschoolers ages 3 to 5, there will be nature-themed activities and crafts while parents and guardians meet other playgroup parents once a month. Seasonal topics will also be explored, and there will be a garden walk, games, and songs. 4603 Green Spring Rd., Alexandria, $12 per child
