July 4, 2026, will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Washington, DC, has big plans in store for its celebration.
Destination DC announced its plans for the year-long semiquincentennial celebration on Tuesday, with more than 70 partnering organizations. So far, plans include fireworks, a grand parade, a two-day celebration on Pennsylvania Avenue, a month-long festival on the National Mall, and special exhibitions in the city’s museums throughout 2026.
A new website, DC250.us, launched to serve as the central source of information for these events.
“Washington, DC, is America’s front door, and we look forward to hosting the biggest and best semiquincentennial celebration in the country,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We know that there is no place in the world that tells the story of America better than Washington, DC. So, our message to fellow Americans is this: Start planning your trips to DC now – we can’t wait to celebrate with you.”
The National Archives, which currently has on display the Declaration of Independence, will add new encasements to the Rotunda to permanently display the 19th Amendment and the Emancipation Proclamation. It will also host a special exhibit titled Road to Revolution and a Sprit of Independence Festival in June 2026.
“We hope every American will come through our doors and visit our nation’s founding documents,” said Archivist of the United States Colleen Shogan.
Other noteworthy events and openings include the addition of a new museum opening under the Lincoln Memorial, a series of free performances at The Kennedy Center, and special programming on the National Mall.
