Find Authentic Chai at These NoVA Restaurants

Indulge in a symphony of spice with a masala chai right here in Northern Virginia.

By Bennett Freeze January 26, 2024 at 11:05 am

Warm, frothy, and aromatic, something about masala chai is the perfect antidote to Northern Virginia rain and snow. Although new-wave coffee shops often use “chai latte” to reference a super-sugary spiced tea beverage, the word chai translates as just “tea” in many South Asian languages. But truly authentic masala chai is a labor of patience and love — composed of strong brewed black tea and a blend of cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, and black pepper — and once you try it, it’ll be tough going back to the premade stuff.

Because no two restaurants will make masala chai the same way, don’t be afraid to try more than one. Here are some of the places where you can get an authentic cup of masala chai.

Elaichi Tea

Half tea shop and half Indian eatery, Elaichi Tea gets its name from the Hindi word for “cardamom,” a crucial ingredient in imbuing masala chai with its characteristic comforting flavor. Elaichi’s masala chai is made of whole milk, sugar, a housemade spice blend, and Wagh Bakri black tea. 4300 Chantilly Shopping Ctr., Ste. 2F, Chantilly

Chai Wyy

If the top-notch (and affordable) Indian street food isn’t enough to satisfy, the desi (local) chai will undoubtedly be a hit. For a spicy/sweet pairing, order your chai with a glass of mango lassi, a silky-smooth yogurt-based drink blended with ripe mangos. 289 Sunset Park Dr., Herndon

Bombay Café

While Bombay Café is known for its wide-ranging selection of North Indian dishes, the masala chai does not disappoint. It’s the perfect way to finish a meal of chana masala, a slow-simmered chickpea curry with mild ground chile, tomatoes, and cilantro. 11213 Lee Hwy., Ste. E, Fairfax

Chaatwala

Take a deep breath, pull up a chair, and savor your masala chai with some chai ke saath, snacks traditionally served with tea. Named after real Indian street food vendors, Chaatwala cuts no corners with its tasty bites or masala chai. For an uncommon treat, try the masala soda. 1050 Elden St., Herndon

Jaipur Royal Indian Cuisine

Named after the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, Jaipur Royal Indian Cuisine combines northern Indian cuisine with Bengali classics. Try a hot cup of masala chai after a wintery night meal, or order a strawberry lassi to cool off when the balmy weather returns. 9401 Lee Hwy., Ste. 105, Fairfax

Mirch Dhamaka

For breakfast, head to this eatery for a range of filling South Asian breakfasts, including dosas, and the housemade masala chai for a great start to your day. 2443 Centreville Rd., Ste. G1, Herndon
