On the Market: An Old Town Alexandria Townhouse Built in 1780

This two-bedroom property on Queen Street is bathed in history, and it’s for sale for $1.1 million.

Nothing embodies the essence of Old Town Alexandria quite like the rows and rows of historic townhomes, and this one, with its soft white exterior walls and bright blue shutters, is no exception.

It’s a classic Old Town townhouse, located at 323 Queen St. — just two blocks north of King Street’s bustling restaurants and shopping. It’s located within the Alexandria Historic District, which is recognized by the National Register of Historic places. This home, and those around it, are a testament to Alexandria’s rich history in the 18th and 19th centuries and beyond.

The property has two bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms, with a total of 1,357 square feet of living space.

Though the home itself is old — it was built in 1780 — it’s had some updates in recent years, including central air conditioning four years ago and a new hot water heater nine years ago. The home is currently listed for $1,100,000.

From the entry, the home is simple and comforting, with wide-plank heart pine floors and a curved staircase leading the way to the second floor.

Fireplaces are some of the most eye-catching details throughout the home. There are five in total, each showing off the rich history of the space. This living room has a brick fireplace as its centerpiece, with warm-toned wood on the walls, shutters, and built-in shelves.

A step down from the entryway is this cozy dining area, where striking wood beams draw the eyes to the ceiling. These beams are centuries old, dating back to when the home was first built.

The kitchen has an eye-catching brick wall with another fireplace, plus dark wood cabinets and a tile backsplash to match. The oven, positioned to the right of the stove, was replaced about five years ago, according to the listing.

There are two bedrooms upstairs. The primary bedroom has a large mantel with an impressive fireplace, and two windows to let in some light.

The second bedroom is smaller, with a slanted ceiling and more wood panels. It’s connected to a sitting room with a fireplace that could serve as a home office or as a spare bedroom. There is a full bathroom upstairs, and one half bathroom downstairs.

Out back is a brick patio with a garden, complete with a crepe myrtle tree, azaleas, hostas, irises, and peonies. The plot of land is 2,000 square feet. One of the most coveted amenities is the off-street parking, located behind the garden fence.
