World Market Closing at Fair Lakes Shopping Center

A thrift store chain that has multiple NoVA locations may replace the home décor store.

By Colleen Kelleher July 5, 2023 at 4:15 pm

World Market in the Fair Lakes Shopping Center is supposed to close on July 15, but will likely close sooner because the store is running out of inventory.

The 30,000-foot home décor store that sells furniture, snacks, gifts, and wine is owned by Cost Plus World Market opened in the shopping center in February. The store now is largely empty.

A recorded message for the store said it was “closing soon” and that customers should “come in for huge savings while supplies last.” An employee who answered the line Wednesday said it was anticipated that the store would close prior to July 15 because it was “running out of stock.”

World Market may be replaced by Savers Value Village, a thrift store chain that trades on the New York Stock Exchange. The chain filed a request with Fairfax County to make sure it could operate at the Fair Lakes location, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Among its dozen stores in the DC area, Savers Value Village has two in Fairfax County, Unique Merrifield in Fairfax Plaza and 2nd Avenue in the Woodlawn Shopping Center. It also has a store in Woodbridge. Northern Virginia Magazine is trying to find out whether Savers has an anticipated opening date.
