What You Need to Know About Renaming of Lee and Lee Jackson Memorial Highways

Individuals and businesses affected by the name change will need to update a number of documents.

By Colleen Kelleher June 19, 2023 at 7:45 am

The name changes for Lee Highway and Lee Jackson Memorial Highway in Fairfax County will happen on July 5, and that means residents and businesses will need to update their addresses.

Fairfax County said that once the names are changed to Routes 29 and 50, those affected may want to update these items:

  • Driver’s licenses.
  • Utility company information.
  • Address with the postal service.
  • Legal documents that have your address, such as your mortgage, lease, loans, trusts, and wills.
  • Address with businesses that provide material goods and services, such as Amazon.
  • For business owners: State and local business licenses, procurements with retail and/or wholesale companies, advertisement listings, and maps.

The county will automatically make the address changes for property taxes, voter registration, and other county records, including Fairfax Water.

The county will pay for the cost of updating any highway signs. It is working on a grant program to help those who can’t afford the costs associated with “updating marketing materials, signage and other expenses related to the name change.”

Fairfax and other jurisdictions are phasing out Confederate names as they focus on social equity.
