It’s time to flex your political muscles.
Virginia’s June 20 primary is just around the corner, but early voting is already underway.
Seats are up for grabs in the state House and Senate, and there are a slew of local races as well.
From who’s running to where you can vote, here’s what you need to know.
Voting 101
Early voting runs until June 17. You can find your early voting location by searching for your local registrar’s office online.
Election Day itself is on June 20. You have to vote at your assigned polling place, which can be found at the aforementioned website. Voting is allowed for anyone in line by 7 p.m.
If you aren’t registered yet, you can take care of that, find your polling place, request a mail-in ballot, or simply check your status online on the Department of Elections website. The deadline to register to vote, or update an existing registration is May 30, though you can register after May 30, through Election Day, and vote using a provisional ballot.
Mail-in ballots can be requested until 5 p.m. June 9. All absentee ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by the local registrar’s office by noon on the following Friday will be counted.
Virginia law requires you provide identification like a driver’s license or student ID card at the polls. Acceptable forms of ID are listed online. If you don’t have one, you can sign a statement affirming your identity or cast a provisional ballot.
The commonwealth’s open primaries mean you can vote regardless of party affiliation. You will find the complete list of candidates and referendums online.
Finally, the general election is November 7.
