Two teenage girls died Tuesday night after a Lexus they were driving in the Fairfax Station area of Lee Chapel Road veered off the road and flipped onto its roof.
Emergency personnel pulled a third teen from the wreckage just after 9:30 p.m. and transported her to a hospital “with injuries considered life-threatening,” according to Fairfax County Police. The two decedents were pronounced at the scene.
Speed is believed to be the main factor in the single-car crash, an initial investigation found. As the vehicle traveled north on Lee Chapel Road, it crested a hill and the driver lost control. The car then “left the roadway” and “came to rest on its roof,” police said. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
While FCPD policy does not allow for the identification of juvenile victims without parental consent, family members of one of the deceased confirmed in a conversation with NBC 4 that Ariana Haftsavar, 16, was a passenger in the car and was returning home from an SAT class at the time of the crash.
Haftsavar’s family said they realized something was wrong and rushed to the scene once the teen’s GPS tracker on her phone came to an extended halt along the precarious roadway.
“At that point I broke down, I fell down on the ground,” Bahman Haftsavar, the teen’s father, told NBC 4. “I said I want to go and see her, officer wouldn’t let me. I pushed him and said, ‘This is my world. She’s my daughter. She’s my everything.'”
The narrow, winding, and undulating stretch of Lee Chapel Road where the crash occurred has been the sight of numerous accidents over the years, including a fatal three-car crash in 2015 that killed a 19-year-old.
Haftsavar’s father, like the relatives of the victim in 2015, is now left to pick up the pieces after losing a “caring” daughter who had aspirations of becoming a lawyer.
“She was my only daughter, and I was trying to teach her the best I could, raise her the best I could,” he told NBC 4. “She had a life to live, but that life was cut short. She’s not there any more.”
