7 Women’s History Month Events in Northern Virginia

From theatrical performances and storytelling festivals to walking tours and networking receptions, here’s how to mark the month.

March is Women’s History Month, and across Northern Virginia, organizations are celebrating the women who shaped our past and those shaping our future. Here are seven ways you can commemorate the month.

Abigail Adams: Founding Mother

March 14, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

National award-winning actor and storyteller Megan Wells brings Abigail Adams to life in this engaging one-woman performance. Abigail: Founding Mother explores the wit, intelligence, and political influence of one of America’s most formidable First Ladies, offering a timely reminder to “remember the ladies.”

Leading the Change: A Sustainability Market

March 15, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Presented by the Fairfax County Commission for Women and the Environmental Sustainability Committee, this community market spotlights women-owned businesses focused on sustainability. Expect educational resources, local vendors, and ideas for greener everyday living. Sherwood Community Center: 3740 Blenheim Blvd., Fairfax, free

2026 Women’s Storytelling Festival

March 19 to 22, Virtual option available

Produced by Fairfax-based nonprofit Better Said Than Done, this four-day festival celebrates women and gender nonconforming spoken-word artists. Stories span journalism, activism, immigration, public policy, and performance, told as lived experience rather than lecture.

A special showcase on March 21 at 2 p.m., History Through Women’s Stories, honors America’s 250th anniversary and features portrayals of influential women including Zitkala-Ša and Elizabeth Hamilton. Alexandria Women’s History Walk

March 21, noon to 2 p.m.

Join Alexandria Celebrates Women for a guided 3-mile walking tour highlighting the city’s heroines. Stops include Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, City Hall, and the Kate Waller Barrett House. Comfortable shoes recommended.  Begins at Ramsay House: 221 King St., Alexandria, free

6th Annual Women’s History Month Reception

March 26, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Hosted by the Tower Club Women in Business Committee, this signature reception honors women leaders across industries. Expect curated culinary offerings, signature cocktails, live entertainment, and elevated networking. Tower Club: 8000 Towers Crescent Drive, #1700, Vienna, $95

Women’s History Month Breakfast

March 27, 8:30 a.m.

The Fairfax County Commission for Women’s annual breakfast honors local leaders and changemakers advancing opportunity and equity in Fairfax County. The River View at Occoquan: 9751 Ox Rd., Lorton., free (registration required)

Visit the Lucy Burns Museum

Located on the former prison grounds where suffragists known as the “Silent Sentinels” were once held, the Lucy Burns Museum explores the fight for women’s voting rights and the site’s 91-year prison history. Special Women’s History Month programming includes talks examining the women imprisoned there and their legacy. Workhouse Arts Center: 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton, Free
