March is Women’s History Month, and across Northern Virginia, organizations are celebrating the women who shaped our past and those shaping our future. Here are seven ways you can commemorate the month.
Abigail Adams: Founding Mother

National award-winning actor and storyteller Megan Wells brings Abigail Adams to life in this engaging one-woman performance. Abigail: Founding Mother explores the wit, intelligence, and political influence of one of America’s most formidable First Ladies, offering a timely reminder to “remember the ladies.”

Leading the Change: A Sustainability Market
March 15, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Presented by the Fairfax County Commission for Women and the Environmental Sustainability Committee, this community market spotlights women-owned businesses focused on sustainability. 2026 Women’s Storytelling Festival
March 19 to 22, Virtual option available
Produced by Fairfax-based nonprofit Better Said Than Done, this four-day festival celebrates women and gender nonconforming spoken-word artists. Stories span journalism, activism, immigration, public policy, and performance, told as lived experience rather than lecture.
A special showcase on March 21 at 2 p.m., History Through Women’s Stories, honors America’s 250th anniversary and features portrayals of influential women including Zitkala-Ša and Elizabeth Hamilton. Alexandria Women’s History Walk

6th Annual Women’s History Month Reception

Women’s History Month Breakfast

Visit the Lucy Burns Museum
Located on the former prison grounds where suffragists known as the “Silent Sentinels” were once held, the Lucy Burns Museum explores the fight for women’s voting rights and the site’s 91-year prison history.
