When Springfield entrepreneur Destiny Sweeney Durant needs inspiration, she turns to treasured memories—her late grandmother’s home-cooked meals and the fine china and glasses she used to decorate her table, or her mother’s art collection. “I was always surrounded by art that looked like me,” says Durant, who earned her degree in marketing at Hampton University and started her online lifestyle brand, Destiny’s Caché, in 2017. The label, which is among the Black-owned lines carried at the new Gift Shop at Union Market in DC, honors her grandmother and caters to women of color. “It’s important for [them] to see themselves represented on products in all mediums,” says Durant. Here, her personal favorites.
Team Coco
“When I do get to treat myself, I visit Tysons Galleria. One of my favorite stores is Chanel for the handbags and accessories. The designs always make me feel classy and fabulous.”
Date Night
“Magnolia’s on King is wonderful. The ambience is amazing, and the food is even better. My favorite item is the shrimp-and-gouda grits.”
Pinkies Up
“I love to drink a cup of tea before I go to sleep, so my Destiny’s Caché teacups and saucers are a must. Some of my favorite teas are mint, chamomile, and sorrel.”
Burning Bright
“When I am designing and creating, I always light a candle. The Sol Brothers Shukorina is a go-to. The warm and woody scent is very relaxing.”
Flower Power
“Every month, I receive a beautiful bouquet from Florals by Kiki. The owner blends her love for fashion, art, and flowers to create breathtaking bouquets. My favorites are the ones that include daisies since my grandmother’s name was Daisy.”
The Good Life
“Due to the pandemic, I haven’t been able to experience the spa in more than a year. I’ve relied on products from Oh So Good Organics. I’m in love with the bath bombs—it’s become a routine after a long day to run a hot bath to unwind, relax, and slow down.”
Lip Service
“I love brands that make an impact. Every time a Juicy by Jay lip jelly is purchased, a [product] is donated to programs and facilities that empower and support women.”
