If you miss getting your art on now that the Smithsonian locations have closed again due to a spike in cases of COVID-19, there is a new socially distant way to experience paintings and prints locally without even setting foot inside a museum.
Alexandria’s Old Town Business Association and The Art League have collaborated to install art on selected lamp posts around town, a project sponsored by Boundary Properties, which owns the Torpedo Factory Office Building. For the activation, Old Town has worked with more than 25 artists to create holiday-themed pieces including winter scenes, Christmas ornaments and even a mask-clad Santa Claus alongside a roll of toilet paper adorned with “2020” on it.
Officially unveiled during a ribbon cutting on Dec. 6 attended by Mayor Justin Wilson, representatives from The Art League, Old Town Business Association and some of the participating artists, the Arts Walk is viewable now through Jan. 8 along King Street as well on select side streets.
The art is installed on the 100-1800 blocks of King Street, the 300 block of Cameron Street, the 100 block of South Union Street, the 100 block of South Fairfax Street, the 100 block of South St. Asaph Street, the 100 block of North Fayette Street and at 1319 Prince Street. Download the map of the artwork that’s available online, grab a coffee or hot chocolate and stroll the walk at your own pace.
