As of Tuesday morning, Virginia had 100,749 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 8,391 people hospitalized, 2,327 deaths and 1,257,605 people tested. Fairfax has the highest total number of cases, with 16,376 to date, with 1,937 hospitalized and 529 deaths. Arlington has reported 3,077 cases with 437 hospitalized and 135 deaths. Alexandria has 2,964 cases with 278 hospitalized and 60 deaths. Loudoun County has 5,280 cases with 349 hospitalized and 115 deaths and Prince William County has 11,693 cases (including Manassas and Manassas City), with 975 hospitalized and 205 deaths. The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, tallied in at 209,814 in the DMV on Monday morning. Maryland reported 96,258 cases, Virginia reported 100,749 and Washington, DC reported 12,807. Statewide
On Aug. 11, Virginia reported just 663 new cases, the lowest number reported in a single day since July 9. Despite the day of good numbers, the state surpassed 100,000 cases of COVID-19 over the weekend. In general, experts urge residents to rely on the seven-day average instead of day-to-day reporting of numbers. After Aug. 10, the seven-day average is at 1,092 statewide. (Inside NoVA)

Washington, DC updated its list of high-risk coronavirus states Monday evening, removing Delaware, the nearby state where many DMV residents visit in the summer months. Washington state and Ohio have also been removed, while Alaska, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Minnesota have been added to the high-risk list. In total, there are 29 states included in Mayor Muriel Bowser’s order. (WTOP)

Early Tuesday morning, Russia government officials claimed it had won the race to find a vaccine for the novel coronavirus, although testing is not yet complete. According to an article from The Washington Post, officials pledged to vaccinate millions of people with the experimental vaccine beginning this month. The announcement—which has been criticized by several scientists who worry vaccination prior to the completion of testing is dangerous—comes as the number of coronavirus cases has reached 20 million worldwide.
