First workday for WMATA’s summer closures; Centreville student to compete at National Spelling Bee

Today is the first day of an expected 106-day closure of the Metro’s Blue and Yellow lines for platform repairs and other upgrades. Commuters will find busses running to and from the Pentagon (with stops) every five minutes during rush hour, and every 10 to 12 minutes during non-peak times. Riders are encouraged to stay up-to-date through social media. (WTOP)

Centreville seventh-grader Devan Waghrey is set to compete at the 92nd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning the 41st annual Prince William Regional Spelling Bee back in March. He will travel with his family to Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland from May 27 to 30 in hopes of bringing home the $40,000 national prize. (Inside NoVA)

Fairfax County Board approved a 2020 budget with salary increases for teachers and non-teacher employees of Fairfax County Public Schools. The budget includes a $55.2 million investment in teacher salaries and $46.8 million for eligible employees, and a hope to increase the living wage of FCPS employees to $15.50 per hour. Leesburg’s inaugural Dinner on the Rooftop held by The Wine Kitchen in Leesburg raised more than $16,000 for a local nonprofit that helps the county’s homeless and precariously housed youth.  (Loudoun Times-Mirror)
