Solar power plant may be coming to Northern Virginia; Bill to ban using phones while driving fails

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Solar energy company sPower is proposing to build a 500-megawatt project on about 3,500 acres in Northern Virginia. The site would be on land in western Spotsylvania County, and the buyers of the electricity would include Apple, Microsoft, Akami, Etsy and the University of Richmond. (WTOP)

Virginia lawmakers have rejected legislation aimed at keeping drivers off their phones. The House and the Senate passed legislation that would have outlawed hand-held phone use while driving, but the two chambers could not agree on compromise language to get a single bill through both chambers. (WTOP)

In the latest state budget updates, Loudoun County will receive funding for its first state park, slated for the northwestern part of the county. Funding for a regional science center is also included in the budget plans. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)

Over the next few weeks, Arlington County’s Four Mile Run valley will see temporary parking restrictions in an effort to free up curb space. County officials will compare the parking strategies to come up with the best solution to improve conditions for pedestrians and drivers. (ArlNow)
