Federal agencies closed Wednesday for Bush funeral; Reston and Alexandria parades tapped in national poll

Wednesday has been designated a national day of mourning for President George H.W. Bush, with federal agencies across the country closing. Funeral services for the 41st president will be held Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral.

The Reston Holiday Parade and Alexandria’s Scottish Christmas Walk Parade are getting national attention as two of 20 holiday parades nominated for the Best Holiday Parade by USA Today. With voting open until Monday, Dec. 10, the Reston Holiday Parade currently ranks fifth and the Scottish Christmas Walk Parade ranks seventh.

Lyft becomes the third company to offer dockless electric scooters in Arlington, providing 200 to the area with a plan to gradually increase to 350. The scooters will not be permitted to ride on sidewalks or on Arlington County bike trails.

A front-runner may have emerged in the proposed name change for Arlington’s Washington-Lee High School. The committee tasked with suggesting a new name recommended Washington-Loving High School, honoring Richard and Mildred Loving, the couple who’s Supreme Court case effectively ended Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage.

A commuter bus from Haymarket to Arlington will open on Dec. 17 and has also announced that until Feb. 17, 2019, all rides will be free. In addition, Potomac Rappahannock Transportation Commission announced that rides will be half-priced while Interstate 66 is under construction for the next few years.
