Thursday marks the official opening of Widewater State Park in North Stafford along the Potomac River and Aquia Creek. Gov. Ralph Northam is expected to attend the ceremony.

A shooting occurred late Wednesday night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, outside of Los Angeles that claimed the lives of 13, including the shooter. An additional 10-12 people were injured and taken to local hospitals.

There’s a new addition to the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, as the organization announced that a fawn was born on Oct. 26 of its endangered Eld’s deer herd. There are only 1,500 Eld’s deer in the wild, and now there are 12 male and 18 female at the Institute.

Archaeologists from Dovetail Cultural Resources Group have begun a dig of the tunnel that runs underground George Street’s sidewalk in downtown Fredericksburg. The archaeologists are currently doing archival research, and in a few weeks are expected to expand their efforts with ground-penetrating radar to find out how far the tunnel goes.
