Hurricane Michael is gone from the East Coast after making landfall in Florida on Wednesday and impacting the Carolinas and Virginia. As of Friday morning there were 11 confirmed deaths, including five in Virginia, that resulted from the storm, though those numbers could rise.

Other impacts of Hurricane Michael have left more than 10,000 people in Northern Virginia without power, while a wind advisory remains until noon on Friday, with gusts potentially up to 50 mph. Public schools in Spotsylvania and Stafford counties are opening on a two-hour delay.

A planned $227 million renovation of the Arlington Memorial Bridge starts Monday that will impact daily traffic for the next few years. The six lanes of the bridge will be cut down to three, and one sidewalk will be closed as well. The expected completion for the renovation is 2021.

A boa constrictor escaped from its Fairfax County high school lab on Thursday. It was recaptured by Animal Protection officers and returned to its cage.

Construction on The Highlands, a set of three new residential towers from developer Penzance, will officially begin on Oct. 24 in Rosslyn. In addition to residential, the space will contain 40,000 square feet of retail space, with CVS already signed on as a tenant. The Highlands is expected to be complete sometime in 2021.
