National Park Service considering new policies for First Amendment demonstrations; Unite the Right 2 counterprotest planned for Sunday

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Issuing approximately 750 First Amendment demonstration permits per year, the National Park Service is considering new policies and procedures that would create security zones at President’s Park and put restrictions on gatherings at memorials. The public will have 60 days to weigh in, but the public comment period’s start date has yet to be determined.

At Freedom Plaza from noon-3 p.m. on Sunday, an anti-Unite the Right 2 rally will take place featuring musical performances, speakers and a place for children. The “rally against hate” will later march to Lafayette Square, where the Unite the Right 2 rally will be taking place.

A Harrisonburg 48-year-old grandmother and her 12-year-old granddaughter have been missing since Sunday. An Amber Alert has been issued, and the person suspected of abducting them, whose car was found on fire in Warren County on Interstate 66, has been arrested in Pennsylvania. Angie Carolina Rodriguez-Rubio and Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio are still missing.
