Amazon Prime Day deals begin this afternoon; Strike authorized by Metro’s largest union, though not yet initiated

Amazon Prime Day will kick off at 3 p.m. ET on Monday and last longer than usual, wrapping up after 36 hours. Prime Day, which celebrates the company’s anniversary, offers deals and presents new products.

Sunday, Metro’s Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689 authorized a strike for its workers, who are frustrated by what they say is disrespectful management. Details on when a strike might occur have not been released.

Friday morning, 65-year-old Alexandria resident Bradford Jackson was found deceased inside an Alexandria business located in the 1200 block of King Street. The police have called his death “suspicious,” and a 34-year-old suspect from New Jersey has been arrested.

A fire broke out at a high-rise apartment building  in Alexandria’s 5000 block of Holmes Run Parkway early Monday morning, which firefighters responded to at 2 a.m. Three people were transported to an area medical center after being evaluated for smoke inhalation. Residents were allowed to re-enter shortly after 4 a.m.

On the Farifax County Parkway on Sunday, two people were killed and two were sent to the hospital following a 2 a.m. crash in which a 2004 Acura MDX lost control and drove off the road. Police are looking for witnesses to come forward with more information and believe that alcohol may have been involved.

Hoping to increase the commonwealth’s number of bee colonies, a new Virginia program is providing Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services registered beekeepers with three beehive units each year.

On July 19, a public meeting will be held to discuss the Soapstone Connector project, which would connect Sunrise Valley Drive and Sunset Hills Road over the Dulles Toll Road, and the buildings that would be impacted by its development.

During a meeting discussing the fiscal year 2020 budget, Arlington officials found a way to dedicate $230,000 to the design and engineering cost of an access road that would connect Army Navy Drive to the Arlington View neighborhood. County officials originally thought that this project would not begin until 2029.
