Happy anniversary, Solace Brewing Company!
One of my favorite things about Northern Virginia is its abundance of small businesses instead of chain stores. Unlike my mom, who orders the same thing from the same restaurants because she appreciates the predictability of her meal, I like to try new things at locally owned establishments. This weekend, one such venue, Solace Brewing Company, will celebrate its first birthday with an anniversary party featuring food trucks, live music and 10 special taps (five drink tickets are included in the $25 general admission ticket). Hockey season is over. Long live hockey.
Though I grew up mostly in NoVA, I have to admit, I’m not a Capitals fan (congrats on the Cup, but my Philadelphia roots yell “go Flyers”). But I always love to watch a hockey game, and living in this area I remember many of the names that will partake in this year’s Capitals Alumni Summer Classic. Peter Bondra, Olie “The Goalie” Kolzig, Mike Knuble, Craig Laughlin and more are going to lace up the skates for this exhibition game. Anything that makes the hockey offseason seem shorter is a welcome treat in my book. Plus, an ice rink is probably a great place to beat the NoVA heat. -MB // Kettler Capitals Iceplex: 627 N. Simon and Garfunkel remade
I was definitely born late. Simon and Garfunkel is one of my favorites and though I wasn’t even alive when they were still together, my dad played their albums often enough to where I know almost all of their songs by heart. About a decade ago when they got back together for a short-lived tour I was there, very pregnant, along with my dad, husband and sisters. Swearingen and Kelli are bringing the beautiful harmonies to Franklin Park Arts Center this Saturday, so there is a chance to catch the tunes live even if they aren’t coming from the likes of Paul and Art. –LN // Franklin Park Arts Center: 36441 Blueridge View Lane, Purcellville
