Remembrance, entertainment and supporting a good cause
Memorial Day is meant to honor those who have paid the ultimate price fighting for our country’s freedom, though the solemn nature of the day can sometimes be overshadowed by the prospect of a long weekend and the possibility of picnics and parties. Falls Church Distillers does a good job of not only entertaining, but reminding us of why we have off that extra day through their Memorial Day Distillers Festival benefiting Operation Turbo, which sends care packages to those serving overseas. At the free event, listen to live music from seven bands while (for purchase) eating food from Liberty Barbecue and enjoying libations from seven distilleries, two wineries and two breweries. Food/drink tickets cost $20 for 11, $40 for 22, $60 for 33 or unlimited eats/beverages for $350. –RK // Falls Church Distillers: 442 S. Washington St., Suite A, Falls Church
Let the summer of Hamilton begin
There’s this little show called Hamilton that will be coming to the Kennedy Center in June—you may have heard of it—and the whole Metro-D.C. area is eagerly awaiting its arrival with plans to celebrate the founding father this summer. One of these events will take place on Saturday at Mount Vernon, a sing-a-long aptly titled “Hamiltunes.” If you’re a die-hard Hamilton fan, belt out some of your favorite tunes with the performers; or if you’re a newbie, get your first taste of the Tony Award-winner at this historic location. While I did manage to snag tickets to a performance at the Kennedy Center, I’ll have to wait until September to see the show, so I’m counting on “Hamiltunes” to hold me over until then. –MB // George Washington’s Mount Vernon: 3200 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria
Gotta have a laugh
Lately, I’ve been really into stand-up, specifically Ali Wong and Anjelah Johnson. Though I’ve been watching them through YouTube and Netflix, it’s time I break myself away from the screen and get in on the real time laughs at Jammin Java as they host a bevy of comedians during The Later Late Show Presents the Early Show, and Main Stage Comedy Showcase. –LN // Jammin Java: 227 Maple Ave. E., Vienna
