From ’80s music to the George Washington Parkway Classic: What we’re looking forward to this week

This week, the editors at Northern Virginia Magazine are looking forward to ‘Rock of Ages’ at Workhouse Arts Center, Springfest 2018 at Sully Historic Site and running a 10-mile race.

I love the ’80s
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Times vary
Though I may have been a wee one in the ’80s (born in 1980), I was the youngest of five so I got a taste for the music of the time at a very early age. The plays I put on for my parents were set to Van Halen music, and when I was 8 years old, I went out for Halloween as Axl Rose while all of my friends were Disney princesses and ballerinas. Today, my two sons probably know more ’80s music than today’s Top 40. My youngest son is begging me to find him an Iron Maiden concert to go to and he has a Whitesnake concert marked on the calendar this summer. So, it should be no surprise I’m definitely into seeing Rock of Ages at Workhouse this weekend. I bet my kids won’t be embarrassed to go with me either. –LN // Workhouse Arts Center: 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton

Celebrating spring in my backyard
Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
I don’t have an actual backyard as I live in an apartment complex, but every day I pass by signs for Sully Historic Site on my way home. I’ve always wondered what went on at Sully, so—should my seasonal allergies stop bothering me—I plan on spending time there this Saturday at Springfest 2018. It’s free, there’s food and I may even be able to pet an alpaca. Why not? And if you’re looking for an excuse to get outdoors as well, consider doing good for the community with these Earth Day events. –RK // 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly

My birthday gift to me
Sunday, 8 a.m.
I’m probably doing this wrong, but my birthday gift to myself this year is registering for the George Washington Parkway Classic 10-miler. I’ve gotten more into running the last few years and this will be my fourth official race and my longest distance yet. Running from Mount Vernon to Old Town Alexandria, I’ve heard great things about this race from friends and am excited to give it a go. Though I may miss the days when I simply bought a movie I wanted for my birthday immediately after crossing the finish line. –MB // 3200 Mount Vernon Highway, Mount Vernon
