Prince William Schools look to armed guards in schools; Ashburn resident rises on ‘American Idol’

Prince William Board of Supervisors are moving closer to introducing a pilot program that would bring retired police officers in to the schools as armed security guards. (InsideNova)

Police are asking for help to find missing 16-year-old Angelica Flores from the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. A missing persons report was filed on Feb. 17, and she was last seen in the City of Fairfax. Information developed recently leads police to believe Flores may be in danger. She is known to be affiliated with gang members and associates. Flores is 4 feet 11 inches tall, about 110 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair, possibly dyed red.

Ashburn resident Brandon Diaz has made it into the top 24 on American Idol. Diaz, 21, is a graduate from Briar Woods High School and currently attends Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Fairfax County broke ground yesterday on a new homeless facility in Bailey’s Crossroads, the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter and Supportive Housing, on Seminary Road. Expected to open next year, the facility will have 52 emergency shelter beds and 18 housing units. The $12 million center is being funded by a 2016 bond referendum.

A nonprofit group, Voter Participation Center, has sent 140,000 mailers in Virginia that are causing confusion, according to election officials. Geared toward getting out the vote with unmarried women, people of color and millennials, the group’s mailer implies that the recipients are not registered to vote.
