Local schools have varying responses to student walkouts; State Senate says no more school ‘lunch shaming’

Area schools are each taking their own approach to student walkouts. Prince William County students have been told that they will be disciplined if they leave unauthorized while Arlington County schools are being more understanding.

The Senate Education and House Committee approved House Bill 50, which prohibits area schools from making students who owe cafeteria money wear stamps or wristbands, or throw out the lunch that they cannot afford.

Citing an increase in Arlington’s commercial vacancy rate, Mark Schwartz, county manager, has put together a $1.27 billion general fund budget that will require budget cuts and layoffs of $20.5 million, but increase pay to firefighters and police and award $13.4 million to schools.
