Del. Danica Roem proposes suicide prevention training for school staff; Amtrak train carrying Congress members crashes near Charlottesville

Through HJ 138, Del. Danica Roem has proposed that the state’s school boards require all school staff members to take part in a suicide prevention training so that employees are able to better identify at-risk students.

An Amtrak train bound for West Virginia—where the Congress members on board were planning to have a legislative retreat—crashed into a truck near Charlottesville on Wednesday. A passenger in the truck, 28-year-old Christopher Foley, died, and the other two truck passengers sustained serious injuries.

Nicole Mittendorff, a Fairfax County firefighter, suffered from online bullying and committed suicide in 2016. Following Battalion Chief Kathleen Stanely’s announcement that she is stepping down as the head of the department’s women’s advocacy group,  Nicole’s husband, Steve, made a statement asking that Chief Richard Bowers and the assistant chiefs resign as “it is apparent that the Department has a lot more work to accomplish” concerning creating a safe space for men and women to work.

Since September 2017, in a two-mile radius around Dulles Airport, there have been approximately 20 burglaries that Fairfax County Police are yet investigating. The incidents seem to have happened in homes near walking paths and wooded areas while no one was home in the afternoon/evening.

A 17-story office building will come to the Reston Town Center via Boston Properties in 2020. Information technology company Leidos Holdings will make this new 1750 President Street venue its headquarters.

Ashley Darby from Real Housewives of Potomac will make an appearance at this weekend’s Crystal Couture fashion show. Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 2-9 p.m., the free event will feature local designers’ works, a bar, five-minute makeovers and pop-up shops from area boutiques.

Wednesday, the National Air and Space Museum announced that it has received $28 million from nine commercial airlines. The money will be used to remake the “America by Air” exhibition displaying commercial aviation’s history.
