September is Senior Center Month and all of the area senior centers have a host of activities to choose from. Here are some of the top picks.
Senior centers in Arlington are giving an inside look at the Arlington Mill Community Center with a focus on the offerings it has for residents aged 55 and older during the open house on Sept. 15 from 1-2 p.m.
Get into a coffeehouse feel with live music on Sept. 16 from 7-9 p.m. at the Langston-Brown Center when acoustic band DEMZ plays classic rock, folk and pop music from the ’60s and ’70s.
On Sept. 23 from 2:30-4 p.m. at the Lee Center, you can take in live performances from The Lee Line Dancers, The Sultanas, Tom and Fran’s Partner Dance and Carl Gold’s Folk Music Chorus.
There are also two informative workshops: one focusing on downsizing your home at Arlington Mill Center on Sept. 16 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and the other delving into mental health, specifically the plasticity of our brains and how behavior and lifestyle change as we age. Nort Beckerman, author of A User’s Guide to a Healthy Brain, will finish up the event at Walter Reed Center on Sept. 30 from 9 a.m.-noon.

The City of Alexandria has a plethora of events and clubs for seniors that happen on an ongoing basis at all of the six community centers. Creativity clubs include art, jewelry, knitting and a pinochle club and game nights.
Those who are looking for something a little more active, there are line dancing and square dancing clubs, lunchtime hatha yoga, a strength and conditioning club as well as senior-centered sports clubs including pickle ball and basketball, plus softball, soccer and volleyball leagues.
And if you want to expand your knowledge, the centers also have programs such as computer skills, community presentations and discussion groups.

Along with the Senior Olympics happening throughout the county, Fairfax has a lot happening for Seniors this month. Fairfax City is hosting bocce ball and horseshoe events at Green Acres Center on Sept. 14, followed by an End-of-Summer Luau Potluck Picnic starting at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 15. The center is also hosting a few Lunch & Learn events including emergency preparedness on Sept. 11 at noon and Final Affairs Project on Sept. 22 at noon.
Bailey’s Senior Center is hosting a trip to The Wharf DC on Sept. 15, leaving at 10:30 a.m., and the center’s Book Club is back with a bit of a redesign for a discussion on Sept. 25 at 12:45 p.m.
The Gum Springs Center is hosting special trips for apple picking on Sept. 19 at 10:30 a.m. and shopping at an Amish market (Sept. 14), Potomac Mills (Sept. 20) and Springfield Mall (Sept. 27).
Hollin Hall Senior Center is getting into the seasonal spirit with an Oktoberfest on Sept. 20 at noon where you can chow down on brats and kraut on a bun while being entertained by Owen Hammett and his Oom-Pah Band. (Sign up by Sept. 11; 703-765-4573)

Of Loudoun’s four senior centers stretching across the county, there are many things happening to get involved in. All of the centers have ongoing athletic, art, gaming and educational events, but the ones you should really check out this month are Potluck Bingo Sept. 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Cascades, a nutrition seminar Sept. 27 from 1-2 p.m. at the Carver Center and the Creative Writing seminar at the Dulles South Senior Center on Sept. 25 at 10:15 a.m.
Now is your chance to make it on TV as Manassas Senior Center is hosting the Happy Hoofers on Sept. 21 at 12:30 p.m. As they perform they will also be recorded by WDCW (DC 50). The center also has a slew of learning, fitness and gaming activities happening on a regular basis throughout the month.
