“Hey Jealousy Hurts So Good” might be the name of the playlist I draft this week in anticipation of not one but two tremendous concerts. Tonight I will return to Wolf Trap for a night of Mellencamp, which I hope will include a few cuts from his latest bluegrassy album, Sad Clowns and Hillbillies. On Sunday, I’ll stay a little more local both in terms of venue, the State Theatre, and the band, the Gin Blossoms, who hail from my home state of Arizona. If you need me, I’ll be in the back, bopping my head and feeling like a cast member from some great ’90s TV show. ’80s-inspired TV
Premieres July 5
With all the summer TV and movies about to drop, I’m settling in for FX’s Snowfall, the story of how crack started. I’m a sucker for any period drama, and as an ’80s child, I have high hopes for this show, no matter the dismal plot. –LN
Listening to Broken Social Scene’s new album
Out July 7
In my teens, Broken Social Scene was a band I had a deep affection for, and I cherished their 2002 album, You Forgot It in People, and its track, “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.” Now the Canadian indie-rock collective is returning after a seven-year hiatus since their last album, Forgiveness Rock Record, and I couldn’t be more excited to hear their latest release, Hug of Thunder. (The title track is very promising.) –BK
Grand Reopening of Mom’s Organic Market in Del Ray
July 7-9
As a restaurant critic I don’t need to grocery shop all that often, but when I do, I go to Mom’s Organic Market in Del Ray. It closed mid-June for an expansion, and I’m pumped for the revitalized store, which will be 40 percent bigger and will include Naked Lunch Kitchen. Enjoying an early-week day off
To celebrate the Fourth of July, I’ll be heading to Bethany Beach on Tuesday. It’ll be my first trip to a Delmarva beach and the perfect way to relax for a day before heading back to the office Wednesday and wrapping up the August issue. –WD
