Congressman shot at Alexandria baseball field; Northam and Gillespie advance to Virginia gubernatorial general election

A gunman opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria Wednesday morning, injuring House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana and others. Scalise is reportedly in stable condition, and the suspect was shot and transported to the hospital.

Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam beat former Rep. Tom Perriello 55.9 percent to 44.1 percent in the Democratic Virginia gubernatorial primary. Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie beat Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart in an unexpectedly close race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, inching out in front 43 percent to Stewart’s 42.5 percent.

North Korea released University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier, who was detained for 17 months, in a coma. Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years hard labor for taking down a propaganda poster. Warmbier returned to his Cincinnati home Tuesday.
