You don’t have to travel far to take in the architectural beauty of a lighthouse along the shore. Just south of Old Town Alexandria sits the last remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia at Jones Point Park. Built in 1855, the lighthouse is no longer open to the public, but that doesn’t harpoon you from doing some afternoon or evening exploring. There is a trail that walks you through the history of this former center of shipping, manufacturing and transportation, and exhibits showcase the area’s freshwater marsh habitat. There are two fishing piers to hook American catfish, rock bass and eels, and a canoe and kayak launch brings you into the Potomac River. For wee ones, there are two playgrounds along with basketball courts and multiuse fields.
