On March 1, Capital Wine School will be hosting its semi-annual indoor 1k Wine & Beer Walk, a tour of some of the area’s best beer and wines, in the Crystal City Shops for $40 from 2 to 7 p.m. There will be an appropriate 21 beers/wines to taste, five of which have yet to be revealed.
This spiritual journey begins in the Landing at 1750 Crystal Drive, where participants will receive either a Wine or Beer passport, a map and pick a start time for their contest of will. This event will consist in eight stations throughout the five blocks of the Shops, where walkers will redeem their passport for a matching beverage. Along with beer/wine tastings, the last station will include a live DJ, and a dance floor; the ingredients are there, it’ll up to the walkers to mix them.
“We want to showcase wines from all around the world, stylistically a good representation of whites and reds,” said Jim Barker, founder and president of Washington Wine Academy. “We’re focusing more on the craft beer, some local, some not some local.”
Wine or Beer 1ks have been hosted by the Washington Wine Academy since January 2011, but this will be the first time Wine and Beer have been combined into one event.
“It was an event I actually sat on for five years. DC is a very athletic town, full of half-ks, 1ks, 5ks, 10ks, and its an interesting way to tie in DC’s love of Ks together with tasting beer and wine,” said Barker.
The Washington Wine Academy is one of the Top 5 Wine Schools in the United States, according to foodandwine.com, and offers a variety of classes throughout the year. “The DC Wine market is one of the top wine markets in the U.S.,” said Barker. “We’re very lucky here in Washington to have access to people who love wine, beer, and spirits.”
