Con artists know your weaknesses and how to steal your money. An upcoming Fairfax County event called Scam Jam aims to educate people about how to avoid becoming a victim.
The Friday, April 19, event by AARP and Fairfax County’s Silver Shield Task Force will be held from 9 a.m. until noon at the Fairfax County Government Center. It will feature Stephen Ruth, a professor of public policy at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, and Jane King, an anti-fraud advocate who lost $15,000 in a grandparent scam.
You will learn the techniques con artists can use to take your money, such as using artificial intelligence to mimic voices, how photos are altered, and how to spot mistakes in scam emails.
The event will point out scam red flags and teach you how to report fraud.
Cyber security experts and American Bankers Association representatives also will be on hand.
The Scam Jam program, for which you need to register, starts at 9 a.m. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Complimentary refreshments and lunch will be provided.
You can also bring two banker-sized boxes of materials to shred. The shred truck will be there from noon to 3 p.m.
