NoVA raises awareness for breast cancer research and treatment

Every October, NoVA communities rally together to fundraise and increase awareness of breast cancer research and treatment.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives. Research shows early detection is one of the best ways to fight breast cancer, and as a result, the month of October is dedicated to fundraising and increasing awareness about the disease and treatment research. Throughout NoVA, there are screenings, galas and other charitable events that help disseminate health tips and prevention techniques, raise money for research and support survivors.

The following events are some of the opportunities for NoVA residents to join the fight against breast cancer this October and November:

Wine & Design
Oct. 14, 7 p.m.
Donate to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation while painting a design of your choice with friends. // Wine & Design Studio: 556 Garrisonville Road, Suite 206, Stafford

Fourth Annual Race for Every Woman 5K Run/Walk
Oct. 15, 9 a.m.
This Arlington 5K benefits Alpha Breast Cancer Support Services. // Barcroft Park: 4200 S. Four Mile Run Drive, Arlington

Breast Cancer Awareness Yoga Class
Oct. 16, 9 a.m.
Show your support by donating to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and participating in a yoga class geared toward promoting healthy living. // Athleta Tysons Corner: 8034 Tysons Corner Center, McLean 

Walk to Bust Cancer
Oct. 16, 9 a.m.
This walk aims to raise awareness of the different physical, emotional and financial challenges associated with the disease. // Fort Hunt Park: 8999 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria

10th Annual Cherry Blossom Walk, Fun Run and Pooch Prance for Breast Cancer
Oct. 16, 11:30 a.m.
Bring your friends, family and dog to stand up to breast cancer by raising money for Loudoun’s Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation. // Foxcroft School: 22407 Foxhound Lane, Middleburg

Pathway to Survivorship: A Breast Cancer Survivors’ Retreat
Oct. 22, 9 a.m.
This retreat is designed to help survivors, friends of survivors and all Leesburg women openly discuss the challenges associated with breast cancer. // Inova Loudoun Hospital: 44045 Riverside Parkway, Leesburg

Fifth Annual Bras for Hope
Oct. 22, 10 a.m.
Women, particularly those who have undergone mastectomies, can be fitted for a bra that fits their changing bodies at this event. // Fairfax Corner: 11889 Grand Commons Ave., Fairfax

The Pumpkin Run for Loudoun Breast Health Network
Oct. 23, 8:30 a.m.
Support the Loudoun Breast Health Network while participating in this fall-centric race. // Wayside Farm: 5273 Harry Byrd Highway, Berryville

Support Our Girls: Jogging for Jugs 5K & 10K
Oct. 1-31
This race is perfect for people who have busy schedules but want to contribute to breast cancer awareness: Participants can map out their own courses at any time throughout the month. Donations are determined by individual sponsorships and individually pledged race goals. // Create your own course anywhere in Arlington

Sixth Annual Zumba Against Breast Cancer
Nov. 5, 1 p.m.
Get fit and dance it out while supporting the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. // George Mason University Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center: 9100 Freedom Center Blvd., Manassas

Breast Cancer Tea For Survivors and Friends
Nov. 12, 11 a.m.
Drink tea with family and friends while supporting breast cancer survivors. // Carver Center: 200 E. Willie Palmer Way, Purcellville

BluFire Events Breast Cancer Awareness Masquerade Gala
Nov. 19, 7 p.m.
This masquerade gala provides an evening of raffles, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Donations benefit Beyond Boobs. // Fire Hall Flame Room: 215 S.W. Loudoun St., Leesburg
