Rail biking blends cycling, sightseeing, and just enough novelty to feel like an adventure from the get-go. You’ll ride specially designed, pedal-powered vehicles along historic railroad tracks. No steering required, just sit back and pedal. In Allegany County, where railroads once powered the region’s economy, these corridors are among the most unforgettable ways to explore the mountainous terrain.

Drive Time from Dulles: Approximately 2.5 hours
Check in with Tracks and Yaks at the historic train depot in Frostburg. After a brief orientation, guides help you settle into recumbent-style rail bikes designed for two to four riders. The seats are comfortable, the bikes feel stable, and the steel wheels glide smoothly along the rails. Thanks to a gentle downhill grade, the ride feels easy and relaxed, even for beginners.
The 7- to 15-mile route descends through the Allegheny Mountains, crossing bridges, passing through the historic Brush Tunnel, and revealing forest and valley views rarely seen from the road. Along the way, you’ll ride beside the Great Allegheny Passage, a popular long-distance trail for cyclists and walkers. Wildlife sightings are common, including hawks overhead and white-tailed deer on the tree line. In summer, wildflowers like black-eyed Susans and mountain laurel are in bloom.
Guided tours can run two to four hours and move at a comfortable pace, with plenty of time to enjoy the fresh air and wooded landscape. For a half-day adventure, Tracks and Yaks offers a combo trip featuring a 15-mile rail bike ride from Frostburg to Cumberland, followed by a shuttle to lunch on the north branch of the Potomac River and an optional kayak float.

Where to Eat and Stay
Cumberland’s revitalized downtown has evolved into a hub for outdoor travelers. Ease into your day at Basecamp Coffee Co., a favorite for espresso drinks and vegan-friendly baked goods. For lunch or dinner, Ristorante Ottaviani serves housemade pastas and rich, flavorful sauces in a warm, family-run setting. Lefty’s Place leans casual, a trendy pizza joint that specializes in Detroit-style deep dish and thin crust tavern-style pizzas. For a classic post-adventure treat, Frostburg Freeze has been serving soft serve ice cream for more than 70 years.

For overnight stays, the Wills Hotel, which opens in June, offers stylish rooms within walking distance of shops and cafés. For a quieter, nature-focused stay, Rocky Gap Casino, Resort & Golf overlooks Lake Habeeb inside Rocky Gap State Park, with direct access to the park’s 15-plus miles of hiking trails, including the popular 5.3-mile Lakeside Loop.
