Planning a trip to Iceland? PLAY, a low-cost Icelandic airline, begins flights out of Dulles International Airport on Wednesday.
The airline, founded in Reykjavik in 2019, travels to Iceland, Paris, London, Dublin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and other European cities.
PLAY, which also has service out of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, uses new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft. It says the flights will provide no-frills service.
“Travelers are more conscious of price than ever, but they still want to have memorable experiences and visit the bucket-list destinations PLAY reaches. By expanding service to IAD and introducing PLAY Bundles, we will service the Washington D.C. area’s demand for Icelandic travel as well as vacationers heading to Europe this summer. We’re focused on enabling passengers to pay less and PLAY more, and today’s expansion accomplishes that goal,” said PLAY CEO Birgir Jónsson, in a news release.
PLAY Bundles combine travel upgrades, such as priority boarding and checked baggage, into one discounted price.
“Tourists from North America have been by far the single most important group of visitors to Iceland in recent years and PLAY adding Dulles to its roster of destinations in the U.S. will only strengthen the blossoming relationship between our two countries,” said Bergdís Ellertsdóttir, Iceland’s ambassador to the U.S., ahead of her speech at the inaugural flight ceremony Wednesday evening.
The airline said it plans to expand its U.S. presence. With flights from Northern Virginia, Maryland, New York, and Boston, it predicts it will fly between 1.5 million and 1.7 million passengers in 2023.
