You’ve seen her on Broadway and on TV. Ahead of her September 13 show at Wolf Trap, this Emmy- and Tony Award–winning actress talks about what she’s been up to and the magic you’ll see on stage.
In August, Kristin Chenoweth finishes up a six-week, limited engagement pre-Broadway premiere of a show called The Queen of Versailles based on the 2012 documentary of the same name. The documentary told the story of Jackie and David Siegel, owners of Westgate Resorts, as they built a private residence called Versailles, one of the biggest and priciest single-family homes in the U.S. before the 2008 recession. We talked to her before her pre-Broadway show.
She and her good friend (and fellow Broadway star) Alan Cumming have a show together at Wolf Trap.
Tell us more about your tour with Alan Cumming. How did you two become friends? Do you have a favorite duet you enjoy singing together?
We became friends when we did the movie Annie in 1999. We became fast friends there and continued to work together on other projects. We also hosted the Tony Awards together in 2015 and recently worked on Schmigadoon! together.
What can people who attend your Wolf Trap concert expect to see?
I’ll be showcasing music from my For the Girls record and a fun duet or two with Mr. Cumming! It won’t be all music theater! It will be a night of fun and diverse music.
What projects are you working on later this year and next?
I am currently working on a new Broadway show called The Queen of Versailles based on a documentary of the same name. We will be doing a Boston run of the show at the Colonial Theatre, and then we’ll be headed into New York very soon. This fall, I’ll be working on my next album as well.
Do you have any favorite places to visit in Virginia and/or the DC area?
Wolf Trap! This will be my third or fourth time performing there, such a beautiful place to sing for any artist.
