Reston Triathlon Returns After 3-Year Hiatus

The event has been taken over by new organizers. Find out how to register for the September event.

The Reston Triathlon, an annual athletic tradition that has been on hold for three years, returns this September for its 37th event. The event will take place on September 10.

The Reston Triathlon, which bills itself as the “Reston Triathlon World Championship,” began in 1984. The nonprofit originally in charge of the triathlon canceled the 2020 event due to the pandemic, then announced in 2021 that it had to discontinue the event due to financial concerns.

“Unfortunately, we were just not able to overcome the mounting financial and logistical challenges we experienced these past few years to host a race that the community has come to know and love,” the original organizers said in a January 24, 2022 Facebook post.

The CORE Foundation, a nonprofit charitable incubator, has since taken over the event, growing it into a series called Racing in Reston, which included the Reston Sprint Triathlon on June 3 and the Reston Superhero Youth Triathlon on July 16.

“Working closely with the previous board, CORE Foundation is thrilled to bring back this event and continue the legacy of the Reston Triathlon,” the CORE Foundation said on its website. “CORE Foundation is grateful for the overwhelming support from the athletes and local community received while pursuing the opportunity to restore this community tradition.”

The triathlon will continue as an annual event and will be held on the first Sunday after Labor Day in the years to come.

This is an Olympic distance triathlon. Athletes will swim 1,500 meters in Lake Audubon, followed by a 25-mile bike ride, and a 10K run.

Athletes can register until September 3 on the CORE Foundation’s website. Registration fees begin at $155 from now until August 20, then will increase between August 21 and September 3.

The Reston Triathlon also needs volunteers to assist September 9 and September 10.
