From Hot Air Balloons to Local Art, These Are the Top Hobby Festivals in Northern Virginia

No matter what you do in your free time, there is sure to be a festival surrounding your favorite passions.

By Megan Perry August 12, 2022 at 3:46 pm

From days dedicated to furry friends and cosplay at its finest to flying high among the clouds, there’s a festival for just about everything here in NoVA.

Festival of Crafts and Kites

Aug. 20, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
If a day filled with flying kites, shopping the booths of local artisans, and chowing down on some great food sounds like a good time to you, try Leesburg’s Festival of Crafts and Kites. This family-friendly event has more than 60 vendors, music from an international DJ, and a special kids’ zone. 60 Ida Lee Dr. NW, Leesburg

Flying Circus Hot Air Balloon Festival

Aug. 20–21, 6 a.m.–4 p.m.
The gates open at 6 a.m., and this festival provides the perfect opportunity to see the breathtaking views of the NoVA region from way up in the air. Keep in mind: The earlier you get there, the better. Lines grow as the day goes on. 5114 Ritchie Rd., Bealeton

Fairfax Comic Con

Aug. 27, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
With special guests John “Dak” Morton (who played Boba Fett in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back) and Carey Jones (who played Krrsantan in The Book of Boba Fett), this is one event Star Wars fans won’t want to miss out on. There’s no better time to channel your inner superhero than at this event with dozens of vendors and exhibitors in Artist Alley and a cosplay contest. Dulles Expo Center, 4320 Chantilly Shopping Ctr., Chantilly

DogFest Washington DC

Sept. 24, 11 a.m.—3 p.m.
They say a dog is a man’s (or woman’s) best friend and this special festival was created to celebrate that special bond. With a fitness challenge, fundraising opportunities to support Canine Champions, and local vendors, it’s bound to be a great time for you and your pooch. Mention if you’re bringing a dog when registering so you don’t miss out on your free DogFest bandana. Reston Town Center

The charming riverfront town of Occoquan knows how to draw a crowd. Save the date and plan to take a stroll through the historic district as you shop local vendors, try yummy street food, and listen to some live music. And don’t forget to check out the beer garden. Occoquan Historic District

Art on the Avenue

Oct. 1, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
Need an art fix? Look no further. Artists here sell drawings and paintings, photography, ceramics, handmade candles, and mixed media. And the fun doesn’t stop there. Food vendors, retailers, music, and even a virtual pie auction will be part of the festivities as well. Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria

MPAartfest

Oct. 2
McLean Central Park is transformed into a cluster of mini galleries showcasing works from artists throughout the mid-Atlantic region for this event, featuring contemporary art, food vendors, live music, and a Children’s Art Walk. 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean

Fall for the Book Festival

After two years of being virtual, this book-lover’s paradise will be back in person this fall. Book readings, exhibitions, discussions, and performances will take place over four days. And there will still be some digital opportunities as well. Past headliners have included Stephen King, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Neil Gaiman, and Delia Owens. 4400 University Dr., Fairfax

Capital Art and Craft Festival

This three-day festival features the work of nearly 200 juried artists, with a variety of food vendors, music, and handmade art in mediums such as clothing/textiles, paintings/prints, and leather, wood, and glass pieces. Dulles Expo Center, 4320 Chantilly Shopping Ctr., Chantilly

Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival

Oct. 14–16
More that 750 riders from the mid-Atlantic and beyond arrive for this weekend of cycling. If you’re a beginner, don’t fret; plenty of rest stops are included in the schedule. Fredericksburg Fall Home & Crafts Festival

Oct. 15–16
